CBD oil for fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is notoriously known to millions of people all over the world. According to existing studies, in 10 patients having fibromyalgia, 8 or 9 are women and only 1 or 2 are men. It is hard to diagnose fibromyalgia, as there are no clinical tests to define this particular state. Before saying for sure that this is fibromyalgia a person has, all other possible medical reasons for similar states of the body must be ruled out.

What this state is? People with it may have such symptoms:

  • problems with breathing

  • chest pains and bad feelings

  • symptoms of flu & cold

  • anxiety & depression

  • issues with concentration & memory

  • fatigue & dizziness

  • headaches

  • irregular sleep and other sleep disturbances

  • syndrome of irritable bowel

  • jaw pain

  • nausea

  • tiredness or pain in the facial muscles

  • painful periods in women

  • problems with pelvis

  • pain & unpleasant sensations in legs

  • sensitivity to heat/cold

  • problems with skin

  • tingling & numbness in limbs

  • gain of weight

  • urinary problems

  • widespread pain

  • vision impairments.

What is the oil of CBD?

CBD oil is the substance that is received from a type of marijuana plant called hemp. It derives from stems and flowers of the plant. CBD oil differs from hemp oil (that you might have also encountered with) with the source of origination – hemp oil is received from hulled or non-hulled seeds of the hemp plant and it does not contain CBD substance at all.

CBD will not make you ‘high’ as THC does – the main substance of marijuana, which is notoriously known for its effect of getting people ‘stoned’, which mainly makes the marijuana (mostly) illegal to use across the globe, especially, in the US (but some states have made marijuana legal for recreational purposes). While in usual marijuana, there may be around 10%-30% of THC substance, in hemp, it is only up to 0.3%, with the most content of CBD oil – about 20-60% of it (depending on the species of plant and the way it is grown).

CBD is a substance that connects with the endocannabinoid system of the human body (which is responsible for homeostasis) and improves the functioning of it. It is known to have a positive influence on sleep, immune, pain systems of the body, improving the functioning of the nervous system as well.

Despite the fact of the existence of many pieces of study of marijuana and hemp on the body of human and pets, many of them are controversial to each other, do not include the control groups with the placebo or do not differ from the placebo effect. Also, a little substantial control over these pieces of research is done, with the following re-examination, conducting the same research to prove or decline the obtained results. Also, nearly every study is conducted with a little group of people, which arises the chance of statistical error and irrelevance of the obtained results to a large group of people.

In addition to the mentioned, only the short-term action of CBD has been studied and there are no reliable studies of a long-term effect of CBD exist.

Pieces of research for fibromyalgia

The state of fibromyalgia generally causes pain in the soft tissues of the body. It may also cause general fatigue and other types of discomfort– in addition to the pain as the main symptom. It is hard to say an exact reason for that as too few clinical studies have been brought to life about fibromyalgia and its triggers but it is believed that the following ones may be the reason:

  • traumatic injury

  • rheumatoid arthritis

  • genetic factors

  • autoimmune disorders such as lupus.

There are a few pieces of research about fibromyalgia itself and what we currently have are mostly studies for pain, which is not directly connected to fibromyalgia. They show alleviation of pain in some patients, which use CBD oil (or CBD isolate) as a part of some product containing CBD. It is also shown that those patients, which take medical marijuana for treatment, have a better degree of alleviation of pain than ones taking pure CBD. So, it is currently believed that THC contained in medical marijuana has a much bigger effect on fibromyalgia than CBD itself, although further studies are necessary to say for sure.

How exactly does CBD for fibromyalgia work?

It is believed that molecules of CBD oil come into direct contact with the endocannabinoid system of the human body, affecting type 1 and type 2 receptors of it (located in the human brain and all over the body, where nervous and immune cells are present). Shortly after the contact, the human body starts producing CBD molecules in a natural way. With the growing number of them, the pain goes away (not just the pain connected to fibromyalgia but also other types of pain, which can be not only in soft tissues of the body but also in joints, internal organs, and head).

As fibromyalgia is considered incurable health state, there are general recommendations on how to help people with it:

  • psychotherapy

  • physical therapy

  • massage

  • chiropractic care

  • behavior modification therapy

  • an active exercise program

  • acupuncture.

Patients with this state are also prescribed low-dose anti-depressants but they can be replaced with CBD oil if their physician considers cannabinoid oil for fibromyalgia an effective replacement for the chemical medications.

Effectiveness of CBD

There are scarce pieces of evidence about the benefit of CBD oil for fibromyalgia pain. It stays generally unknown how exactly CBD helps and why it helps to one people why it does not to others. The mechanisms of its effect on the human body are still needed to be studied, as well as the effectiveness of hemp oil for fibromyalgia.

In addition to CBD, it is known that fibromyalgia is treated effectively with physical exercises, acupuncture and changes to diet. When it comes to diet, then there are few recommendations, which have already shown its effectiveness in a fight with the disease:

  1. Include low-sugar or no-sugar products

  2. Avoid gluten

  3. Fermentable oligo-di-mono-saccharides & polyols shall be excluded

  4. Excluding additives and excitotoxins from your ration, you largely help reduce the level of pain. A direct connection between these was found. When, after some time, previously excluded additives and excitotoxins were added back to the diet of the patient, the pain level significantly increased.

  5. Try to eat more seeds and nuts due to many powerful micronutrients and minerals in their content, which are known to be highly efficient for the general well-being of a human body.

Legality of CBD

Since December 20, 2018, CBD oil that contains up to 0.3% of THC is legal across the USA. The hemp can be grown, harvested, CBD products from it can be produced, and CBD can be sold. The only strict requirement is that the plant and the obtained CBD product shall not contain over 0.3% of THC in the dry weight. If they contain over that that – such CBD products are considered illegal.

CBD is not legal in most part of the countries of the world. Currently, from 203 existing countries and separate territories, in 149 of them, CBD and other products derived from medical cannabis are illegal (within this definition, we have also included all sorts of states of illegality of CBD, including ‘illegal but decriminalized’, ‘illegal but unenforced’, and ‘unknown’ – the latter is the case for North Korea). In other 61, depending on the country, cannabidiol’s state is one or several of the following options:

  1. Cannabis-based drugs

  2. Cannabis-derived drugs

  3. Decriminalized

  4. Legal

  5. Legal with some conditions

  6. Legal on some parts of the territory

  7. Medical only

  8. Only some specific drugs based on CBD are legal

  9. Usage of CBD with a special permit.

Also, the FDA of the US has not approved the usage of CBD for any kind of treatment and prohibits adding CBD to foods.

Usage and CBD dosage for fibromyalgia

There are no known dosages of intake of CBD for fibromyalgia. Each case must be solved with a doctor after the health examination of each individual patient. A doctor has to make a prescription of the dose.

If you consider starting taking best CBD oil for fibromyalgia without visiting a doctor, then you should follow the general rule: take the as little dose as possible and then carefully watch after your body and its reaction. In the case of absence of any reaction, gradually and moderately increase the dose during the next intake.

Effects of CBD on fibromyalgia

There are too few pieces of evidence of long-term effectiveness of CBD oil for fibromyalgia but it is known for sure that CBD helps withdraw pain from the body in general – which is a large chunk of effects of this disease. If you wisely combine CBD for fibromyalgia and other medical recommendations such as diet, correct nutrition, losing extra weight, and include regular physical exercises, then the effect of CBD can be much bigger.
